Artur Bettencourt Reis

Mr. Artur Reis, 88, died Thursday, November 17, 2022 at Tega Cay, SC.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, November 21, 2022 at St. Anne Catholic Church, Rock Hill with Father Louis Pham. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Rock Hill.

Artur was born and raised in Sao Jorge, Azores, Portugal. Son of Antonio Reis, and Maria Bettencourt Reis. He served in the Portuguese army and worked as a Floriculturist in Half Moon Bay, CA. He was a widower of Margarida Noronha Reis after 55 years of marriage. Father of John Reis, father-in-law to Audrey Reis, and grandfather to Elijah, Dominic, Quentin and Tobias Reis.

He loved his homeland of Azores islands in Portugal, where he raised goats. He moved his young family to California for a better life, and spent much of his life in Half Moon Bay amongst relatives. He loved to visit with his large family that lived close by in California.  He enjoyed gardening, from colorful flowers for his wife, to sharing his crops of fruits and vegetables with friends and family. He moved to South Carolina in 2003 to be close to his son and help raise his grandsons. He raised chickens and grew grapes for homemade wine. He was a selfless and devoted caregiver of his loving wife Margarida through her illnesses in her final years. He spent the last few years in the household with his son, daughter-in-law and adoring 4 grandsons.
