Onelia Cecilia Velazquez

Onelia C. Velazquez, better known as Abuela, passed peacefully on June 9, 2022 at the age of 94.  Onelia was born in 1927, in Banes, Cuba, one of five siblings. She moved to Santiago, Cuba with her husband, German J. Velazquez (deceased 1985) where they had three children, Gina, Jorge and Georgia. The family immigrated in 1967 during the Freedom Flights to Miami, Florida where she lived and worked for 52 years. She enjoyed traveling with her family, loved gardening and yard work, bird watching, sewing and embroidery, and playing scrabble.  At the age of 92 she relocated with her youngest daughter to Fort Mill, SC where she lived her remaining days.  Abuela will be remembered for her joyfulness, spirituality, strength, her incredible artistry, her competitive spirit, and her support and companionship to the entire family. She is survived by her children, grandchildren Jessica, Alex, Nicole, Michelle, Stephanie, Janet, Lauren and Eliza and great grandchildren Nolan, Olivia, Simon and Claire who will always cherish her loving ways.
